The next step

Aidboard. Oneworld. Duurzame vacaturebank. Devex. Devnet. There is an endless list of sites to browse that contain development jobs. It’s what I do quite often now. I need to get an idea about what I want to do after Bangladesh. And it’s not easy, not easy at all. The first question is already impossible to answer: what is the priority in development? Do I want to work on food security? Without food you die but that chance is pretty big without safe drinking water as well. But in the end it all doesn’t really matter if you get ill and there is no proper hospital. So health? Or is everything we do in those areas useless unless we create a great education system? Or put an end to climate change?

There are some organizations that seem pretty nice: Restless development for example. Or Oikocredit. Or this programme of Foreign Affairs. Or should I stop looking to go abroad and focus on jobs in the Netherlands? There doesn’t appear much on the sites I’ve visited so far (although Oikocredit is Dutch). And what appears is often related to CSR-jobs in companies. Not something I’m really interested in at the moment! But to continue working with youth, in a capacity building job in micro credit or at the UN through foreign affairs seem pretty nice options.

Maybe it’s all about waiting for the right job to come along now. To keep looking and eventually something will work out. It’s something that worries me sometimes. Applying from abroad, not being able to do an interview in person. Or maybe through a very limited Skype connection. How will that work? Will there be a challenging job that I’ve enough experience for? Will there be a job that I really like? Will I have to make concessions? There is no way to answer those questions. But it would just be nice to know a little bit more sometimes.
