Update school: ready to start building!

A long due step forward! We’re going to start building! I’ve had a meeting this morning with some local village heads (Karbari’s) and ALO management & staff to start planning (don’t worry about the looks in the picture, they are all happy but it’s not allowed to smile in pictures). The building should be ready at the end of February, although this is of course a Bangladeshi deadline ;) .

The team: Arun Kanti Chakma (ED ALO), Kula Ram (Karbari Para no. 8), Ama Ram Tripura (Karbari Shailatuli Para), Fulesh Chakma (Karbari Machalong), Sudha Bindu Chakma (ALO employee), Sawmen Talukder (ALO PC)

The model

And some details on the building! The school will have three rooms. Two class rooms and a smaller one for the teachers and to store materials. The design is based on the school in the village of one of the other Karbari’s (see picture, although I think we don’t get a two-layered roof :) ). The school will be around 14,5 by 5,5 meter and mainly build from local materials. The people in the village will collect those from the area they live in. On Monday Sudha will go to the village and coordinate this with the Karbari and other villagers. He will supervise the village in building the school and making sure all the money is spent well. He lives close to the village (only a 2 to 3 hour walk) and has been involved in ALO’s project in Sajek.

Detailed budget

Financially it is also going really well! When I started this, I never thought it would actually happen. Who in his right mind would ever give me his money… Clearly, a lot of people. Thank you everyone for not only donating (sometimes huge & unexpected) amounts of money but also for all the nice words along the way. With the, just received, €200 from ClubTien‘s benefietavond I currently have €5.760,60. Or enough to get 48 out of 68 children to school for three years. Only 20 left! We’re almost there…

Hopefully we will see pictures of the building soon. I can’t wait! And a special thank you from 68 soon to be very happy children in a tiny village no-one has ever seen.

Or buy one of my pictures, profits will go to the school as well!
